Sewing in the Summer with Kids

Sewing in the Summer with Kids

Posted by Robyn Thomas on 30th Jun 2023

Let's hear it for the summer months! School is out. Vacations are planned. Family trips to the pool several times a week. Picnics and play in the park. Lazy days and movie nights are upon us. And then, you start to hear those words that haunt every parent. "I'm bored." And "There's nothing to do." Check you calendar... really? It's not even July yet!

Have you taught your kids to sew? Well, what are you waiting for? You have the machine. You have a lovely stockpile of scrap fabric. And now, you have a guide that will get your son or daughter off and sewing with just a few clicks of the mouse. We have dug into our archives and compiled a list of just a few of our past blogs that are designed with kids in mind. Take a look at these helpful articles that will help you to have your kids sewing in no time. Just think, a few fun projects to keep their hands busy and their minds off of the screen. What could be better than that?

In April of 2020, we introduced you to Nicole. She is the mom of three girls and she shared her love of sewing and textiles in a video all about the important elements to consider when teaching children to sew. You can find the link to her video on our blog link below. This is a great source to get you started sewing with your kids. Nicole with share all the basics with you.

Next, remember Kip?

kip sews Village Green with mom

Kip took an interest in sewing while watching his mom start hew own sewing journey. She indulged his interest and together they made a drawstring bag. But Kip didn't stop there. He took an interest in her Village Green Cornflower colorway, and now they are sewing the clues together.

The PMQ is a great way to involve kids and develop their sewing skills, as it is all pre-cut and color coordinated for you. You just sew and go. As long as your son or daughter can sew that straight line with the quarter inch seam, they can help you put together your PMQ. And maybe, you can order one for them. Don't forget that our next PMQ Carnival is taking place right now.

So, now you are looking for an easy project to get those kids started at the machine. All you need is an easy project, something with just a few materials to get them started. We have just the project for you. This is really easy, and how much are your kids going to love selecting some fabric and sewing their own pillowcase for their bed? This is a project they will use everyday to remind them of their sewing summer.

Here's another idea for an easy project you can sew with your kids. Order one of our Gnomes of the Month. This is an easy get-started project that is fun to do, and customizable to your needs. So far in 2023, we have released six sets of Gnomes, one per month, with four options each month.

You can order boy and/or girl gnomes. And each month you also have the option of two accent blocks as well.

There is even the option to purchase a Quiltsmart grid interfacing. Iron your individual pre-cut squares to the interfacing and then sew away. Either way, our Gnomes are easy and fun and will keep your kids occupied for hours. And I promise you, a new sewer can master a Gnome and make it look professional. It truly is an easy and affordable project for a first-timer. You will not regret it.

Here is a photo of a January accent from the Gnome of the Month. This was the first project sewn by the owner. On a sewing machine given as a gift to someone who had not sewn since 7th grade Home Ec class. (Yes, it was me.) Is it perfect? Of course not. But it was so much fun to do, and my sewing skills have already improved tremendously. When we say that a Gnome of the Month is a great beginning level project, so easy even a child can do it, we are not kidding. Kids, and new sewing adults, will love this.

Don't forget about our monthly Color Challenge cards. What better way to get your kids started on a simple sewing project than to sew one of our Blocks of the Month? Those fun cards come monthly in your Cotton Cuts memberships. And, you can also find each month on our website under the ABOUT menu.
