Teaching Children How to Sew (the machine basics)

7th Apr 2020

As mentioned in yesterday’s email, we are focusing our attention at Cotton Cuts to connect to two most important parts of our company - our employees and our members. Up first, we’d love to introduce you to Nicole. Nicole is a mom to three lovely girls (you get to meet them in the video!) She is also a staff nurse, a substitute school nurse and a business owner at Yummi Tummi Creations, a local embroidery business. She is a tester for multiple apparel pattern designers and a strike off seamstress for customer fabric suppliers. At Cotton Cuts, she works on our teaching curriculum and is our key liaison for Girl Scout Programs. She describes herself as follows:

I have always been fashion orientated from a young age. I began modeling at the age of four and have loved the fashion industry since. I minored in Textile and Apparel Management at the University of Missouri-Columbia. I began to embroider when my oldest was a baby in 2013 and began sewing while pregnant with my second child in 2014. Embroidery and sewing has allowed me to make the most fun and exquisite clothes for my three adorable little girls!

In this video, Nicole and her oldest daughter Lorelai talk about the important elements when teaching children how to sew. This is a great resource for those unfamiliar with sewing machines and a refresher for those of us that are very seasoned as to what is important when teaching children. There is also a hot tip on how to correctly load your bobbin correctly, every time. I’ve been sewing for 30 years and didn’t know this tip!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jo7L7rAuZ3I

In this video, we use stitching sheets from Lily Shine Creates which can be found at https://lilyshinecreates.com/

We also talk about the Skater Skirt by Love Notions, which can be found here: https://www.lovenotions.com/

Please note, these are not affiliate links and we do not receive compensation if you visit the link, but we're providing it because they are nifty and we thought you'd think so too!

In future episodes, we'll talk about kid friendly projects and patterns that can be made, such as pillow cases and hair ties. Be sure to check back here in the coming days for our staff auction projects and our “Learn a New Skill” series. We can’t wait to share them with you Thank you again for your amazing support. We couldn’t do what we do without members like you!
