9x13 Cozy

9x13 Cozy

Posted by Joanne Halliburton on 27th Oct 2022

The arrival of Fall makes me start to think about cooking some of my favorite comfort foods and this casserole cozy is perfect to carry your dish to the table ready to serve dinner. It is made with two layers of cotton batting to protect your surface like a potholder adding a splash of color with these fun fat quarter fabrics from the Mini Pop Membership. Pamela Baker from The Birch Cottage has a free pattern and template to make a 9x13 or an 8x8 size cozy. These are on my handmade holiday gift list to make for friends and family this year!

Materials Needed:

To get started download and print the template for the cozy. You may need to shorten the length of the middle section by about ¼” to ½” to get it to fit on the fat quarter. I did this and had no problem with the fit when it was completed.

Place the template on the fold and cut one for the outer fabric and one for the lining.

You will need to cut two pieces of cotton batting with the template as well.

Layer the fabric piece with the batting piece. I like to use the spray baste to hold the layers together.

Mark the center line and then mark a line from corner to corner. Sew on these lines with a coordinating thread. This will secure the batting to each piece of fabric.

Next you will take the right sides together and match the corners, clip in place. Sew a ⅜” seam with a smaller 1.8mm stitch length. Do this on all the corners.

I tested out the fit with my current glass 9x13 dish.

With right sides together lay the outer layer and the lining pieces together and sew a ¼” seam allowance. Leave about a 4” opening for turning.

Clip the corners and curves. Turn right sides out and press aligning the edges. Turn under a ¼” at the opening. Topstitch ⅛” from the edge with a longer 3mm stitch length with a coordinating thread color. Give it a final press. You're finished and ready to serve some of your favorite fall recipes in style!
