We Are Moving Up and Moving On

Did you know that Kim Moos started Cotton Cuts in her basement? With a hunch and a vision of how she could help fellow quilters get their hands on some of the most beautiful fabrics out there, easily delivered to their door and ready to sew. Her vision became our Classic Box. The concept is that beautiful fabrics, based on your preferences, likes and needs, are selected specifically for you and sent to your door.

Our first Puzzle Mystery Quilt launched quickly, and a flurry of experiments, trials and errors on how to die cut and kit was underway. Before long, she outgrew her lower level and moved Cotton Cuts, plus four employees, into a great space in Chesterfield Mall, in a suburb in St. Louis County, Missouri.

In an era where the traditional shopping mall was quickly becoming extinct, Cotton Cuts and Chesterfield Mall found a way to reuse the ample amount of space in several creative ways. In addition to housing Cotton Cuts, the mall has also become a pickleball court, a home for a bingo hall, as well as a few small shops and businesses.

Cotton Cuts, for a short sliver of time, enjoyed hosting Cotton Cuts Collective. A sewing machine and project studio set up to provide space for sewing groups, and offering lessons. What a great space for creative minds and groups to come together and work together. Sadly, our studio closed up at the beginning of the pandemic.

Did you know? Cotton Cuts was considered an essential business during the pandemic because we were providing fabric and sewing masks?

As business grew, more space was needed. Cotton Cuts moved into our next location across the mall hall. Kim paid a few college students $100 and pizza to load our items on dollies and carts, moving into the final mall location. Plenty of room to spread out and grow our business, taking on more projects and more employees.

Life is full of curveballs, though we knew this one would be thrown at us someday. The Chesterfield Mall location now has an active plan in place to demolish the current building and develop the space into new retail, restaurants and apartment complexes. So Cotton Cuts is on the move.

On our LIVE last week, Kim shared her Top 5 memories at our location. Make sure to tune in on our YouTube channel to listen to Kim’s fun stories here: How It All Began

In October, Cotton Cuts will turn eight years old. What an amazing path this small business has taken so far. Just wait to see what happens next!
