A Detective’s Guide to a Stress-Free PMQ Journey

Starting your Puzzle Mystery Quilt (PMQ) is such an exciting experience—each month brings a new surprise and a chance to see your quilt come to life. With a little planning and a few simple habits, you can keep the process smooth, organized, and enjoyable from start to finish. Staying on track not only reduces stress, but also ensures you’re ready to fully enjoy the big reveal when the time comes.

Make Time to Sew

Consistency is key. Set aside time each month to complete your clue and block it on your calendar. Most clues take about an hour (a bit more for larger quilts), making it easy to fit into your routine.

If you crave interaction with other sewers, consider joining us during our monthly Sew-In. It takes place on Zoom the third Thursday of every month from 7:00–8:30 PM CDT. It’s the perfect time to work on your clue while enjoying fun conversation. We chat about our PMQ journeys, share colorway choices, and dive into other hot Cotton Cuts topics. Plus, if you have questions, this group is a great place to get answers. You can find the link to join on the Cotton Cuts Fabric page the day of the Sew-In.

Prep Before You Begin

Before starting your PMQ, choose your thread and make sure you have enough to last the entire project. Neutral tones like white, beige, or gray work beautifully and keep things simple.

Pay Attention to the Details

Following pressing instructions—especially the directional arrows—will make a big difference when it’s time to assemble your quilt. Accurate pressing helps your seams line up smoothly.

Consistency matters with seam allowance, too. To keep everything precise, try not to switch machines, thread, or presser feet midway through your project if it can be avoided.

Keep Your Clues Organized

Print out your labels, available in the Evidence Locker, when you start your new PMQ. As you complete each clue, cut out the label and attach it to each piece before storing. This simple step keeps everything clearly identified and easy to find later.

When it comes to storage, choose one dedicated spot and stick with it. A box works perfectly—whether it’s your Cotton Cuts shipping box, a clean pizza box, a plastic tote, or even a drawer in your sewing space. Keeping everything together will save you time and frustration later.

Stay Connected & Get Support

One of the best ways to stay in the loop is by following the Cotton Cuts Fabric group on Facebook. It’s a great way to make sure you never miss an announcement or the latest updates.

Not only do Cotton Cuts administrators regularly share helpful information, but fellow detectives also jump in with stories, challenges, and observations along the way. It’s a supportive, welcoming space where you’ll always feel connected throughout your PMQ journey.

Missing anything in your monthly clue? Don’t wait—email us right away so we can get replacement pieces out to you quickly.

Think Ahead to the Big Reveal

The final reveal has a way of sneaking up! Try to stay current with your clues so you’re ready when the full layout is unveiled. You’ll want to be able to jump right in, assemble your quilt, and show off your beautiful colorway—we can’t wait to see it.

And remember—don’t be the detective who’s still on Clue 6 while everyone else is enjoying the Big Reveal! Staying on track each month means you get to share in all the fun and excitement right alongside your fellow PMQ detectives.

With a little planning and organization, your PMQ journey can be just as fun and rewarding as the finished quilt itself. Every clue you complete brings you closer to seeing your quilt come to life, and staying on track ensures you won’t miss a single moment of the excitement. Remember, you’re part of a community of fellow detectives—sharing stories, colorways, and creativity along the way—and we can’t wait to celebrate your finished quilt and the unique masterpiece you’ve created.
