Meet Jennifer from Slightly Biased Quilts

Posted by Robyn Thomas on 11th Dec 2023

We are so proud to be partnering this month with Jennifer Worthen of Slightly Biased Quilts. Jennifer is our Featured Designer for the month of December, offering a few of her select quilt patterns with each Modern Maker and Classic Box membership.

Jennifer designs modern quilt patterns that are so easy to assemble. And simply beautiful when completed. Whether you are a newbie quilter, or have been creating masterpieces for as long as you can remember, you will be overjoyed to choose one of Jennifer's patterns with your Cotton Cuts monthly membership this month.

Jennifer has been quilting since 2009, and designing her whimsical creations ever since.

We recently had the opportunity to chat with Jennifer and ask a few questions we were sure were on your mind, as well as ours. Let's get to know Jennifer better.

What is your favorite pattern that you've designed and why?

My favorite pattern I've designed is Vela. I love wonky stars, and interlocking stars, and this combines the two into a fun, unique star pattern. By the end, putting it together is like completing a puzzle, which to me is so much fun.

What other work do you do in addition to your quitting business?

I have a PhD in computational mathematics, and my day job is in simulation software.

Where do you find inspiration for your projects?

All kinds of places! Many of my patterns are just quilts I've always wanted to make - for example, I had always wanted to make a bear paw quilt, so I designed one! Traditional blocks also inspire me. Sometimes I'll start with a traditional block and then see how I can change it up to be more modern or unique. Nature and architecture are also big places for design inspiration for me.

Who do you admire in the quilting industry? What draws you to their work?

I admire so many people in the quilting industry! For fabric, I am really in love with Stephanie Organes' work - her new Wandering line is absolutely stunning. For patterns, I really admire Erica at Kitchen Table Quilting. She's so great at simple yet beautiful designs. And for my side of the work, the business side, I really admire Carolina Moore. She's a great businesswoman and I'm constantly trying to learn as much as I can from her.

What future projects are you working on and excited about?

I have quite a few projects in progress right now! I'm working on a new design for Love Patchwork and Quilting, and a few patterns for some different fabric companies. I'm probably most excited to brainstorm some pattern ideas for my good friend Rachel Rossi's debut fabric line, coming out this spring with Benartex. I also have a pattern based on pom poms that I'm really excited to work on!

Be sure to check out more from Slightly Biased Quilts all through this month. We have more to share from Jennifer.

And, you will be able to download your favorite Jennifer Worthen pattern this month with your Classic Box or Modern Maker Box membership. So if you love our memberships and you love Slightly Biased patterns, now is a great time to make sure both of these items are in your stocking this month.
