Tips to choose your colorway with ease and
create a quilt you’ll love

There are so many schools of thought when it comes to choosing a colorway for a new quilt. Whether it’s our favorite Puzzle Mystery Quilt (PMQ), the options for Mystery 50, or a project you’re planning on your own, selecting fabrics can feel like both the most exciting—and the most overwhelming—part of the process.
Sometimes the choice is easy.
You’re making a gift, and the colors naturally reflect the recipient’s favorites. Or you gravitate toward your own tried-and-true palette. Maybe the project itself sets the tone—rich reds and greens for a holiday quilt or soft pastels for spring.
But sometimes, the challenge isn’t choosing at all—it’s discovering that your first choice is already gone.
What happens when your favorite PMQ colorway sells out?
This isn’t the moment to throw your hands up and decide to skip this round. Instead, it’s the perfect opportunity to step outside your comfort zone and try something new. And truly, there are several good reasons to do just that.
Over the years, we’ve heard from so many Cotton Cuts Detectives who decided to take that leap. They chose a colorway that felt wildly different from their usual palette—brighter than they normally go, softer than they expected, or filled with prints they never would have selected on their own. And the response has been remarkably consistent.
They trusted the process.
They trusted the curation.
And they were absolutely delighted with the result.

Time and again, the feedback has been joy, excitement, and even surprise at how much they loved stepping outside their comfort zone. What once felt like a risk became a finished quilt they were proud of—and often one of their unexpected favorites.
At Cotton Cuts, each PMQ color palette is thoughtfully curated so the final quilt feels balanced, cohesive, and beautiful. We’ve taken the guesswork out of that very first stage of a new project. That means even if it’s not the colorway you originally envisioned, you can trust that it has been carefully coordinated with the finished design in mind.
If you’re unsure where to pivot, here’s one simple strategy: consider choosing a monochromatic option. Quilts built around one primary color family blend beautifully and tend to have a timeless, understated look. They’re versatile and make wonderful “ready-to-gift” quilts for future occasions.

For example, I have three sons and five nephews. With graduations, first apartments, and even weddings on the horizon, I can’t go wrong with working on a blue quilt—or something in classic, masculine tones. Having a finished quilt ready to gift when life’s big milestones arrive is never a bad idea.
Another approach? Follow your favorite designer.
If you already adore a particular fabric designer, that can make your decision simple. Or perhaps you’ve been wanting to try someone new. Designers like Kaffe Fassett and Tula Pink create stunning collections, but investing in an entire quilt’s worth of their fabric can feel like a splurge. Participating in a PMQ featuring those fabrics is a wonderful way to experience a designer’s aesthetic in a thoughtfully coordinated format.
It’s also a great opportunity to experiment. Maybe there’s a designer whose style feels slightly outside your norm. A mystery quilt is the perfect place to stretch your creative wings while still having the structure and support of a curated program.
And here’s one more reason to jump in—even if your first choice is gone: participating in every PMQ gives you early access to the next one. That means you’ll be ready and waiting when your favorite colorway becomes available again, choosing with even more confidence next time around.
So if your top pick sells out, don’t see it as a disappointment. See it as an invitation—an invitation to explore, to experiment, and to grow as a quilter.
Sometimes the most beautiful results come from the colors we didn’t plan on choosing.

And if you’ve been waiting for the “perfect” colorway to join in, maybe this is your sign. Trust the process. Trust your creativity. And join us for the next adventure—you might just surprise yourself.
